If you’ve been on social media today, you’ve probably seen ATINY’s hyped up over the first teaser for ATEEZ’s upcoming title track, “Ice on My Teeth”.
The teaser gives us a closer look at what seems to be the crime gang-like concept of the music video, which many fans are already trying to tie into the group’s overall lore and worldbuilding. But one comparison that has been made multiple times is to the popular British crime period drama Peaky Blinders.
If you’re unfamiliar with the show, it ran from 2013 until 2022, with a movie titled The Immortal Man beginning production earlier this year. The series, set in Birmingham, follows the exploits of the Peaky Blinders crime gang in the direct aftermath of WWI in the early 1900s.
Cillian Murphy plays gang leader Tommy Shelby, and over the course of six seasons, the show follows him and his gang “family” as they expand their criminal organization throughout Birmingham and, eventually, internationally. As summarized by shelbybrothers.com, “Through bribery, violence, extortion and illegal trafficking, they consolidate their grip on the city. Their ambition to amass ever more power brings them into conflict with major rival gangs and political groups. Violence, betrayal, murder and corruption are central themes in the series.”

Sounds not unlike a lot of ATEEZ mob-centric fanfictions that have already been written, no?
While in the TV series, the term “peaky blinders” came from the gang’s habit of stitching razor blades into the peaks of their trademark flat caps (or “peakys”) in order to cause damage from headbutting, in reality, the name is actually thought to refer to the way the gangsters wore their caps in a tilted manner to hide one eye with the peak of the cap.
Because, in reality, the Peaky Blinders was very much a real gang in England, operating from the 1880s to the 1920s. While there wasn’t an actual Tommy Shelby or direct comparisons to other characters in the show (apart from a few), the Peaky Blinders did partake in robbery, violence, racketeering, illegal bookmaking, and control of gambling in Birmingham for several decades. The members consisted largely of young low- and working-class people, and they fought against other gangs in the area to assert their dominance until 1920, when the Birmingham Boys (a larger gang led by Billy Kimber, who was portrayed in the TV series) overthrew them.

Despite their violent behavior and murderous exploits, the Peaky Blinders were notorious for their tailored clothing, which wasn’t common for gang members at the time. Their unusual attire made them distinctive and recognizable by the public, and is another reason why ATEEZ’s teaser is getting comparisons to the criminal gang.
Horse racing and gambling was also a large component of both the Peaky Blinders series as well as their real-life counterpart. And ATEEZ fans discovered that the mansion being used in “Ice on My Teeth” teasers is none other than the Sono Felice Equestrian Club in Korea, suggesting we might actually get the members on horses!

There’s plenty of information on both the series and the actual criminal organization that you can look into online, such as this article written by Historic UK. We have no doubt there will be even more fan-created works inspired by this comeback, and maybe this research can spark some further interest and intrigue into the potential concept and inspiration for “Ice on My Teeth”!
